OL 326 Social Environments of Business examines the interrelationships among business, government and society and how these relationships evolve over time and shape our world. Through the use of readings, cases, and class discussions, students examine a variety of important topics impacting the global business environment, including business power, corporate social responsibility, business ethics, regulation, multinational corporations, globalization, pollution and environmental quality. For the 2021 spring semester we partnered with Second Chance Educational Alliance to produce a community podcast series with the learners of the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Facility enrolled in Project AIM. This partnership was made possible with funding provided from the Shapiro Grant to establish a virtual classroom to connect with learners participating in Project AIM. Specifically, we will examine the impact of incarceration on businesses, government, and society.
THE INSIDE launched in April 2021 with OL 326. Listen here. The second season of THE INSIDE was delivered in connection with PHL 316 Business Ethics in Spring 2022. This course is a philosophical study of moral issues in business. Topics include corporate responsibility, conflicts of interest, morality in advertising, preferential hiring (e.g., minorities and women), personal morality versus employer loyalty, and cultural theoretical issues and their impact on business decisions. For this semester again we partnered with Second Chance Educational Alliance to produce a community podcast series, THE INSIDE, with current and formerly incarcerated individuals. Specifically, students explored the ethics of mass incarceration in the United States using the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights to set the context.
